UCC students Rosie Woods and Mark Kernan were elected to the Executive Committee of Africa Direct at the recent AGM . Also Amy Stapleton, a graduate of the UCC International Development Degree, who like Rosie also spent 6 months on work placement with Africa Directs partners in Kenya, was also re-elected for her second year on the Executive.

Africa Direct has now been registered as a signatory member of the Comhlámh Volunteer Code of Good Practice

Africa Direct is now a signatory to the Comhlámh volunteer charter. Comhlámh act for Irish Aid, as a mark of approval for volunteering sending agencies that commit to implementing good practice standards. Africa Direct has now been registered as a signatory member of the Comhlamh Code of Good Practice.

Comhlámh (pronounced ‘co-law-ve’, Irish for ‘solidarity’) is a member and supporter organisation open to anyone interested in social justice, human rights and global development issues. Comhlámh connects, informs, educates and campaigns on these matters.

Ben Nevis Climb

Ben Nevis, 1344 meters, is the highest mountain in Britain, rising from sea level at Loch Linne. It towers over the town of Fort William. In May it is at its best. No climbing skills or experience needed but a reasonable level of fitness needed….climb Galtee Mor a few times between now & May.

Report from Cork Harbour Cycle

The Cork Harbour Cycle was a great success thanks to the cyclists, volunteers and sponsors. We were blessed with a beautiful day although a strong cold breeze later in the morning made the home stretch very tough for late cyclists and volunteers sitting at registration.

There were 26 volunteers working on the day, organising, ensuring the safety of the cyclists and welcoming them back with hot soup. Many thanks to John’s Ambulance who were ready to attend any fallers & Aidan Quinlan who helped with puncture repairs. Many thanks to all our sponsors starting with the printing of the leaflets by Paceprint to the culmination of hot Avonmore soup from Glanbia, also drinks from Gleesons, fruit from Southern Fruit, snacks from Ryan’s Super Value, transport from CAB and ferry crossings for all the cyclists from Cross River Ferries.

There were almost 350 cyclists completed the route & many thanks to all of you for participating. Fundraising is the overall objective, to help fight some of the dreadful poverty & deprivation amongst the slum dwelling communities Africa Direct works with. Many cyclists brought the sponsorship they’d raised along on the day. We are now sorting through these & will be sending acknowledgements & receipts. Thanks to our volunteers there are no administration costs & as our sponsors ensure that very little has to be purchased, about 98% of funds raised will get to our projects.

Recycling Medical Equipment – Funding a Masters Degree

We allocated €3,000 to a Masters Degree in UCC. The objective would be to investigate the feasibility and draft a business plan for collecting equipment and exporting it to a developing country for refurbishment and distribution to beneficiaries.

Funds for Famine Relief in Nuu

We approved €5,000 to send a truck full of food to Nuu – an area where the famine has been spreading to. Half of this amount was raised by Inishowen volunteers who recently returned from Kenya.

Our partners in Kenya say about the situation:

In Nuu it is the grandmothers, whose adult children are dead, who are minding children who are most at risk together with the children. Where there are healthy adults they will normally struggle to get food from relatives, or beg for it rather than let the chidlren starve.We saw hungry people in Mwingi scavenging for food as sacks of maize were being transported to lorries. Some of the maize grains fell from the sacks and people scavenged for the grains. Mwingi district is now being mentioned along with other districts as a famine district. Nuu is Mwingi South.

The Sisters of Mercy have donated money to the Diocese of Lodwar in Turkana as has our local parish Church. However sisters on the ground have complained that the food is not reaching Lokori, where some people have died already while others are very hungry. We will try to assist those as well.

Food is reaching the Refugee camps and the major towns in the affected areas, but not the people who live far away and who are not accessible by roads which will take cars. Kenyans from all walks of life have contributed while others continue to contribute.

The slum dwellers are also showing bigger numbers of hungry people due to the rise in costs of food.
